Hey, an Assignment

Did some portrait work and general coverage for a theater production last weekend in Logan Square. Blackbox studio. Nice people, everyone very cooperative. Theater people are swell.

I'm guessing this won't make its way into anything they use but I thought it was kinda cool. Only so much you can do at meetings. Supposedly there are rehearsals/ productions coming in the future.

Trying to edit bad pictures into good pictures

These are the times when you need a good photo editor looking over your shoulder, like a veteran surgeon at the E.R.:
"Doctor, you've done all you can. There's nothing else we can do. Call it."
"You call it!"
I do this way too often; invariably after an hour in Photoshop I realize the only thing I could have done was to take it correctly in the first place. Here are a few examples from recent history.

This is just an extreme crop of a vertical shot, at night, in the dark, at high-ISO. It's not an abomination, but the quality suffers from the crop, and I think its actually a bit over-exposed - isolating the highlights in the globes turns the rest of the scene black and we'd still get the light on the guy's face.

Thought motion blur would be a nice effect here, sort of echo their movements... instead it just looks like muck. This scene was so dynamic I kept coming back to it to try to make it look more like it did at the time, but it was a lost cause. A risk that didn't pay off.

Still like this idea, but the execution is off here. Letting the TV/LCD light be the only source isn't working, it needs more fill. Also, I apparently don't know how to iron a sheet. Gotta give this another go sometime, synchronizing all of it is a hell of a deal though - those iphone screens turn off or dim automatically no matter what settings they are on.

this is my one day story. i've got several images i'm happy with but i'm not sure exactly how to make it coherent in a five-picture package. i'm not going to follow anyone around for a story but rather focus more on this place as a gathering spot for a small community. let me know what works. -jim

two shots, same idea. not sure which one i like better, or whether i want to let the text do the talking as much as it does in these two. i only want to have the words "rocheport general store" in there once, if at all, and i've got a picture down the page with that text as well, so at least one has to go.

sherrie ingram, the owner, who was very sweet and had her hands full with all her kids running around. i want to say she had six, but it could be more.

three men and a baby (there were actually 4 but i cropped one guy out for the sake of that outdated pop culture reference). the guy raising his hand rode a unicycle right in front of the store literally 30 seconds after i'd been outside waiting for an opener for 15 minutes and came back in cause no one was around.

standard band shot... probably going to be axed.

here's the other one w/ text. it kind of dominates the photo - i tried to layer this but that might be all people look at. plus it's dark... shrug.

The design, created by Rod Beacher, 60, of Columbia, was created for the church’s observation of Lent, and will be replaced by an image of a “risen” Christ around Easter time. It is the third consecutive year the church has displayed the artwork during Lent.

Sarah Flagg is a sophomore photojournalism student at MU. A member of Alpha Phi sorority, Sarah hails from Festus, Missouri, a small town of about 11,000. Although Columbia is much larger, Sarah has kept in close touch with her hometown friends, a high number of which attend MU.
